Science Alive 11.5.17

For Inquiry we are learning about Water. Science Alive came to visit to teach us all about water.

We learnt about how water is absorbed and repelled.
One of these shirts repels the water and the other absorbs it.

The water is absorbed into the flower and the petals open up.

We learnt that some objects sink and others float. It was a lot of fun experimenting with the objects.

We learnt about how water can be turned to a solid and into a gas.

The water in the themos is hot and it created steam. The ice in our hands was a solid and it began to melt in our hands making a liquid.

We learnt about clean and dirty water and how it can be filtered.

We tried to filter the water.

We tasted the difference between salt water and fresh water. The salt water was not very nice.

We had a great day learning about water!

Sign language week

As part of Sign Language week we learnt some Sign Language.

We learnt some Sign Language for different animals and some sign language relating to our Story Telling.

We learnt how to say The tiger goes over the bridge.

We had to guess what was being said.

Learning Sign Language was fun.

Mr Simpson's final Assembly 12.4.17

Mr Simpson Had his final Assembly at Belfast School today.
He was welcomed in and then the Kapa Haka performed.

There was a Mister Simpson vs Master Simpson Quiz.

The Buddy Classes gave Mr Simpson something to remember them by. Room 18 and Room 4 went up together.

Mrs Johnstone shared some things we would miss.

The Choir and the school sang "To Sir With Love" to Mr Simpson. He got a bit upset.

Mr Simpson had the final word. He's going to miss us a lot!!!

Then, as per Belfast School tradition, we clapped him out of the hall. This is something we do when people leave the school. He walked out with his Grandson Jacob and family friends Cooper and Jacko. It was very sad!!

St John Visit 11.4.17

On Tuesday the 11th of April St John came to visit us at school. The little ambulance came with them.

We learnt what the emergency services are.
There is the Ambulance, Police and Fire Department.

We discussed the jobs the Police, Ambulance and Fire Engines might come to.

We also learnt the number to call if there was an emergency.

111

We went through what the phone operator would ask us...

"Fire, Police or Ambulance"

"What is your address?"

"What is your phone number?"

"Tell me what happened..."

"Thank you, An ambulance is on its way."

Ruby got to pretend she was on the phone to the emergency service operator.

Then we all got to practise calling "111" and talking to the operator.

After we practised calling "111" we had a look at was in the ambulance.

This goes on your finger and checks Oxygen Saturation. We all got to try it on our finger and it didn't hurt a bit.

There was also a stethoscope to listen to our hearts.
There was also an oxygen tank. We got to see how the medicine came out.

They put on the lights and the siren. It was very loud.

We heard a story about another kid calling for emergency services.

We got given a sticker, information guide and a label to go on the fridge with all our details on in case we need to call the emergency services.

We had a lot of fun learning about the Emergency services.
